An Early Work oil painting by KalebLevi. Finished around 2003. These were the developmental years of building confidence and focus. This was one of the first paintings in a series between 2001 -2003.
Admittedly, I must have put a thin coat of gesso on this early work. The pigments do show through to the backside. The canvas is a tight but thin flax linen usually used for portrait paintings. I also stapled the canvas on the sides, not a gallery wrap. A practice from my college years.. why did we do that?
I see "The Book" as an important work. A period of connecting the internal process of creating with the external process of painting.
Location was Weaverville, NC a few years after marriage.
In 2001 I'd gotten away from painting mostly a cathartic style to painting the normal landscape, portrait, cat, and dog paintings.
I think I was trying to be more of a philosopher with this style of artwork. Breaking from a more cathartic approach from around 1991-1993.
That time was emotional and I was trying to think about and express those emotions.
The vibe from 9-11-2021 was the theme of death and dying. This particular painting was influenced by current news of many Christian martyrs.
Also, the thought process was End Times; Revelation, the end of The Book.
This is a vintage work that has never been sold. There are several Digital versions created from this original work.
